We’ve all been there - bringing work stress home and letting it seep into our personal lives. I know I’ve been guilty of it, and let me tell you, nothing good comes from letting work overshadow the sanctuary of your home.
I used to find myself stuck in this cycle. The kids would be telling me about their day, and instead of listening, I’d be mentally willing them to wrap it up. Dinner? It was either a takeaway or something quick, even though I knew it wouldn’t do my energy levels any favors. My mind was elsewhere, racing with work thoughts, leaving no room for rest or connection. Sound familiar?
If you’ve caught yourself doing these things, it’s time to draw the line. Let’s reclaim the good energy that allows us to enjoy our home lives, feel present, and recharge for a happier, healthier us. With a few mindful after office habits, you can create a clear boundary between work and home, leaving stress behind - even on the busiest days.

Take 10 Minutes for Yourself
We all wear so many hats, and switching them in an instant isn’t easy. Give yourself a moment to breathe, reflect, and realign. When you get home, take 10 minutes to sit in the car, listen to calming music, or simply enjoy the silence.
Then, decide what mindset you want to embrace next. Affirm three positive things about yourself as you step into your new role - whether it’s being a parent, a partner, or simply yourself at home. This small pause can transform how you show up for the precious moments ahead.
Why it works: Giving yourself a moment of transition helps clear your mind, reduce stress, and prepare for the next part of your day with positivity and calm.
Go for a Walk
For me, walking Bella has become my go-to ritual after a day at the office. It’s a chance to shake off the workday, breathe in fresh air, and reconnect with the present moment - and it's become the highlight of the day for Bella too (except for dinner time of course!).
If you don’t have a furry friend, no problem. Take a walk solo, with your family, or a favourite podcast or playlist. Imagine the breeze whisking away your stress and the fresh air filling you with energy and positivity. It’s a simple, mindful practice that draws a clear line between two worlds.
Why it works: A walk outdoors helps you decompress, boosts your mood with fresh air and movement, and creates a mental reset between work and home life.
Get Comfy!
First things first when you get home - go get comfy! Slip out of your workday armour and into something soft and cosy. Take five minutes for a little self-care: wash your face, indulge in your favourite skincare routine, and imagine washing away all the worries of the day.
As you change, remind yourself that you’re home, safe, and this is your time to relax. Let those comfy clothes feel like a warm hug, soothing away the stresses and inviting you to enjoy the peacefulness of your home.
Why it works: Changing into cosy clothes signals your brain that it’s time to relax and helps you shake off the tension of the workday.
Have Something to Look Forward To
Coming home to a list of chores can feel overwhelming. Instead, plan something to look forward to - a themed dinner, a movie night with popcorn, or even a quick board game after dinner.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate; even small touches can completely transform a dinner. Brighten the dinner table with fun napkins, set up a cosy corner for your favourite activity or bring out a board game or an after dinner quiz to enjoy a fun family activity. These moments of fun and connection are what memories are made of, and they instantly shift your mindset to one of positivity and presence.
Why it works: Anticipating a fun or relaxing activity shifts your focus from work stress to joy, creating a positive and uplifting evening.
Pick Up a Hobby
There’s something magical about getting lost in a hobby, whether it’s crafting, crocheting, colouring, or even doing a puzzle. These activities allow you to step away from screens, relax your mind, and focus on something that truly brings you joy.
Next time you catch yourself scrolling or dwelling on work, focus on your hobby instead. Let your creativity flow, switch off stress, and enjoy the simple pleasure of doing something just for you.
Why it works: Engaging in a hobby you love helps you unwind, encourages creativity, and provides a digital detox to calm your mind.
The beauty of unwinding after work lies in discovering what truly brings you joy, and that’s a journey of trial and error. You might start with one hobby and find it sparks interest in another, or stumble upon a passion you never expected to love. It could be crafting, cooking, exercising, or even something as simple as tidying up your home - anything that allows you to detach from work stress and embrace the happiness of the moment.
The key is to consistently explore and try new activities that help you reconnect with yourself and fill your life with positivity and fun. This time is yours to relax, recharge, and rediscover the incredible person you are outside of your workday. So dive in, stay curious, and let yourself be surprised by the joy and experiences that await.
